DAY TRIP TO MADRID

On November 28th, 4th year ESO students (Class 4A, 4B and 4C) went on a day trip to Madrid to visit ‘El Prado’ Museum. This excursion was planned both by the CLIL Social Sciences teacher David and the Spanish language teacher Clara. The visit was successfully completed and the students learned a great deal from it!

The 4th year CLIL student Alba González was responsible for taking notes and pictures of everything they did. She subsequently submitted a description of the event to the teacher and details of the trip can be found below.

We started the trip on Friday 28th at 6 a.m. Before arriving in Madrid we stopped in our way so that we could have breakfast.

We finally arrived in Madrid and went to ‘El Prado’ museum. First, we saw the surrounding area of the museum and after having a look at the magnificent building we went in. We stayed in for about two and a half hours. We were glad to see different paintings made by EL Greco, Velázquez, Rubens and Goya. Then, the teachers took us to visit ‘El Madrid de los Austrias’. Unluckily, we had to see it by bus because it was raining heavily. We also went to a mall where we had free time to have lunch and go into the stores.

To sum up the trip, we all enjoyed it very much although the rain kept us from seeing some areas, monuments and buildings.

We hope to come back soon!

PERFORMING SONGS IN MUSIC CLASS

Last 26th November, Nicky, our Native English speaking teacher, visited us at the music classroom.  We performed some pieces of our repertoire with him. We sang the British hymn " Swing Low". Nicky told us that the song was normally sung by the audience at football matches, although it is a very religious and spiritual piece.

We also performed the beautiful hit "I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly. Nicky explained the meaning of the difficult words and helped us with the pronunciation.

You can listen to us on this link:

We want to thank Nicky for coming and helping us.

SCHOOL TRIP TO GRANADA AND CÓRDOBA

On 17th and 18th November, 2nd year ESO students went on a school trip to Granada and Córdoba. They visited two amazing monuments: ‘La Alhambra’ and ‘La Mezquita de Córdoba’. Nevertheless, 2nd year CLIL students were asked to prepare a project in English explaining the trip as part of the volunteer work. They really enjoyed it!

As this was not an activity organised by the CLIL Department and it was not only aimed at CLIL students, what follows is a review of the trip written in Spanish by the Social Sciences teacher Martín García Gómez.

CELEBRATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE CLASS OF ETHICS

The 20th of November was the Day of Philosophy, according to the UNESCO calendar. We wanted to celebrate it properly in our school, and did so having a special activity with 4th year of ESO in its Bilingual modality (CLIL). The pupils were split into two groups that started working by themselves in turns of half an hour. One of them reflected about what makes something or somebody deserve being an ethical subject (that is, is there anything apart from human beings to be taken into account if we want to be good people?). Meanwhile, the other group was debating the moral issue of whether animals should be treated (almost) like people through a prickly case: eating meat. We love our cats, dogs, even our parakeets. Then, do we have a moral justification to eat rabbits, pigs or chickens, even if they are really similar to our pets?  If so, why?

We all have so much to thank to Nicky, the English teacher and assistant, who played the role of Devil’s Advocate willingly, helping Paco, the Ethics teacher, make the pupils understand how deep any kind of daily situation can take us from an ethical point of view.
